NYC in Review: day four (part 2) - trip highlight: moonwork in Greenwich Village

The funnest* thing I did in NYC was go to "an evening of original works" in Greenwich. Yeah it didn't sound all that good to me either. I was wrong, because it was hilarious. The moonwork group has a website, but the list of acts I saw will be lost to history unless I transcribe it here:

Andres du Bouchet
Shayna Ferm
John Oliver
Mike Errico
Michael Somerville
Tom Shillue

The comedy acts were surprisingly funny, the music (Errico) was good. The entire thing was well paced, went by quickly. All for $20, plus all the beers I could drink. That's what I call value for money.

My favorite line of the night was from Somerville who said, "I wait forever to do laundry. I plan my entire social schedule around the clothes I have left in my closet. My friend called me last Friday night and asked what I was doing. I told him 'based on what I have in my closet, I can either go swimming or graduate from high school'". I laughed.

As an added bonus I was chatting with some friends of friends and met one of the people who wrote the commercial embedded above. We had some laughs.

After the show we went to the bars. Weird. I hadn't done that since the night before. My personal highlight was the Journey singalong in the wee hours. I'm not sure if it was awesomely cheesy or cheesily awesome. Both?

* most fun? yeah, I went to college.

dad practice

My weekend wasn't all hot weather and gayness. I mixed in some dad practice on labor day. Any time I do some babysitting or hang out with my friends' kids, that's dad practice.

i went to my friend's house to hang out w/ him and his family. He & the wife have a 6 month old baby, 2 yr old toddler. Fed the baby, played with the toddler. Cute levels were at an all-time high but I didn't get pictures. My friend didn't think pictures would have been cute, but I knew he was wrong b/c the Mrs said it was the cutest thing ever. Girls looove babies. Who knew?

Then i went to the family bbq and had dad practice w/ the older kids: 7 year old girl and 9 y/o boy. We had a blast. The girl loved me because I employed the same strategy I use in my adult relationships: call her princess and say yes to everything. Doesn't matter if they're 7 or 27, it works.

9 year-old boys are great because all they want to do is run in circles and talk about ultimate fighting. And basketball. And video games. That's a funny coincidence because that's pretty much all I want to do, too. (not sure what that says about me, but whatever.)

thanks for reading. super cute photo is stand-in for baby pictures.
thx, smithsonian.

it's not old, it's "vintage"

sometimes creative people do clever things. and share them. If you're into that sort of thing, do one of your own and send it in.
I picked up the reel to reel prints. I wanted the print of the old (oops, "vintage") cameras, but that one sold out. the reel to reels are just as cool.

the sketchbook looks bitchin, too.
